About
Research before assumption.
JCBC exists to help consumer brands make better strategic decisions before capital is committed.
The practice focuses on the decisions that shape long-term commercial outcomes: where a brand should expand, whether a concept genuinely fits a market, how consumers perceive value, and why businesses succeed in one geography but struggle in another. Rather than beginning with creative execution, JCBC begins with the commercial questions that determine whether execution is worth pursuing at all.
Research combines consumer behaviour, competitive analysis, market structure and regional context to produce practical recommendations for founders, operators and investors. Every engagement is designed to reduce uncertainty before expansion, repositioning or operational change, providing clear strategic direction rather than generic reports or presentation decks.
JCBC works across food and beverage, hospitality, retail, wellness and emerging consumer concepts throughout Asia, Southeast Asia and selected international markets. Engagements are intentionally limited in scope, allowing every project to remain research-led, independent and directly involved with decision-makers from beginning to end.
The practice is founded and led by Jovanna Chao, whose background in international relations, qualitative research and consumer market analysis informs JCBC's approach to understanding how culture, behaviour and commercial strategy intersect. Rather than treating research as an academic exercise, the objective is always the same: produce insight that leads to better commercial decisions.

What we do
- 01
Concept Scoping & Category Stress-Test
For founders and brands that understand the sector but haven't yet defined the specific concept, format, or brand direction. JCBC maps the category landscape and stress-tests two or three strategic directions before capital is committed to building anything. The output is a short strategic scoping memo, not a full report, typically delivered within 2–4 weeks.
- 02
Market Entry & Concept Validation
Brand viability analysis, competitive landscape mapping, unit economics benchmarking, and an assessment of whether local consumer demand supports the concept as designed. Delivered as a full report followed by a working session to walk through the findings, typically over 4–6 weeks — scope and fee vary based on the ratio of primary to desk research required.
- 03
Cultural-Fit & Positioning Advisory
For a brand that has already validated demand exists but needs to determine whether its existing format and creative direction translate to a new market — store design, pricing structure, product adaptation, and messaging. The output is a positioning and adaptation brief, typically delivered over 3–5 weeks depending on depth.
- 04
Turnaround & Restructuring Advisory
For an existing brand underperforming in a market it already operates in — not entry, correction. JCBC diagnoses the source, whether consumer misalignment, pricing, positioning, or structural gaps, and works alongside the client through the fix rather than handing over a diagnosis and leaving. Delivered as a diagnostic and restructuring plan followed by hands-on execution support, with timeline defined by engagement scope.
- 05
Ongoing Advisory & Execution Oversight
Continued strategic involvement after an initial engagement — monthly review as a client executes, adjusting positioning against real launch data. Extends to creative and messaging execution support and team or talent sourcing where a client needs to build the function internally rather than continue relying on outside advisory. Structured as a retainer, available only following a completed engagement under 01–04.
